Iron Bridge Pictures, filmmaker David Pushkin and collaborator Tyler Fairbanks present their film, “Edie and Penelope Newcomb” (14min) at Movement Research in Brooklyn, New York. The film explores the relationship between a mother and daughter. The mother (Edie) is suffering from memory loss. The daughter (Penelope) is both a care provider and antagonist. Edie shares her “lack” of memory as a way to uncover insights into the more eternal aspects of living.

The program begins at 8pm and includes three performances and the screening. A discussion will follow.

With his latest film Lasse Lau revisits history at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and challenges concepts of historicism and museology from a time of the early 20th century when history was still seen as universal, and man believed in its abundant truth, to times where several histories challenge each other for the semblance of reality. The film in addition documents the atmosphere in one of the must classic and visually dense and unique museums in the world before it becomes history.

Silvio, One of us, shows the current political mood in Italy and troughout some portraits investigates the phenomenon of how far Berlusconi and his politics mirror Italy. The film was jointly filmed by five Italian filmmakers in the period around the regional elections of March 2010 asking themselves: who are the people that continue voting for the centre-right in Italy and thus supporting Berlusconi?

Radio la Colifata broadcasts from a mental hospital in Buenos Aires. In April 2003, the day before the political election in Argentina, radio La Colifata organized a symbolic election inside the hospital permitting those considered insane (colifatos) to vote. The result inside and outside the hospital it’s the same.

With Open Eyes follows four young female directors all originated from various Middle Eastern countries (Egypt, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon) in a moment of their life. The four directors tell us about “their artistic eye”, the society they come from and the changes they work to promote. For the first time these artists will move from behind the camera to give us a piece of their reality, their thoughts, ambitions and fears.

The link between the eyes of these directors, their gaze upon the reality they face and their artistic production is here central. The question of Identity is also at core as close to all four of them have mixed origins and live in between various countries. Placed in a mobile environment or exiled most have studied abroad keeping a strong insight on the world they come from. This mobility gives them a contemporary approach to media and a global perspective to issues they film.

All between 23 and 34 years old, the directors of this film tend to represent in their own way, various aspects of the new generation of female directors in the Middle East. It is not the meaning here to give an analytic insight to female film production in the region. It is set and focused on four portraits, engaged artists and storytellers.

The Corridor, a film by Sarah Vanagt, has been nominated for the A38-Production Grant Kassel-Halle, while the film Echoes, by Ivalo Frank, has been nominated for the prize The Golden Key.
