English—–

December 11, 8.30pm
Sarma presents:

1. Video lecture by Eric De Kuyper: about Dance at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958 (2008, 27′, Dutch-French)
How did the World Exhibition help to create such a thing as a Belgian dance culture? How was the Expo ideology crystallized in dance criticism? The Belgian writer and filmmaker Eric De Kuyper reads and comments upon some dance critiques of 1958. An intimate and priviliged meeting with history.

2. Between Two Chairs, by Jorge Leon (2006, 16′, English)
The American dancer Ronald Burchi moved to Europe but didn’t manage to tie work permits to his actual working situation and ended up with an illegal status – a situation which is actually more common in the dance world than we know or want to admit. Between Two Chairs sheds light on the many realities of the “Alien Resident”, showing the fragile balance between the artistic visibility of international artists and their social and political rights.

3. 10 min., by Jorge Leon (2008, 19′, Dutch, Subtitles French & English)
Through the reading of a witness declaration, ’10 min.’ narrates how a young girl winds up in a prostitution ring.

4. Fax Film, by Myriam Van Imschoot & Pablo Castilla (no dialogue, 2008)
In an empty space an unattended fax machine receives page after page the names of the people who participated in Crash Landing, the legendary improvisation performance series initiated by Meg Stuart, Christine De Smedt and David Hernandez at the end of the nineties. Winking to the genre of film credits, the alternation of appearance and disappearance of names, some very famous by now, others close to oblivion, raise the question of the politics of the name.

December 15, 8.30pm
Platform+ presents:

1. Los Murginales, by Andres Lubbert (2008, 40′, Dutch)
Kike is a young Argentinian who spent the last 5 years in Europe. Rachid is a third generation Belgian Moroccan. And William is a 64-year-old Belgian. The video portraits their weekly gathering at Los Murginales, the first murga-group in Belgium, founded in 2006. Murga is a form of popular musical theatre performed primarily in Uruguay and Argentina during the Carnival season. Murga is used as a form of popular resistance.

2. Lavé, by Daan Milius (2007, 12′, no dialogue)
In an absurd mini-society braced by a raison d’être that defeats all sense of causality, time and space become the main protagonists. When the beginning turns out to be the end, we are asked to recall whatever ideas of progression we might have. Time strives for its final destination, obstinately, like a boat trying to beat the wind.

3. Zwarte stroom, by Klaas Boelen (2007, 12′, Dutch-French)
Slowly and stylistically filmed we witness an inland waterway vessel transporting coal from Antwerp to Oudenaarde. The sharp contrast between the industrialized zone and the beauty of nature along the canals immediately grasps our attention.

December 17-18-19, 7pm-11pm
Street screening: The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Energy’s Evil, by Mona Marzouk, 2008

The video installation The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Energy’s’ Evil emblematically tackles issues pertaining to energy as the currency of power and life. With the debates about energy consumption, waste, pollution and global warming on the rise as never before in history, Marzouk’s work goes beyond the present gridlocked situation and into a humorously fantastical but somewhat sinister zone where fuels, production facilities, animals and even the architectural landmarks of Newcastle-Gateshead have become metaphorical fusions.

Een videoavond samengesteld door Sarma

2. Between Two Chairs, van Jorge Leon (2006, 16′, Engels)

2. Lavé, van Daan Milius (2007, 12′, no dialogue)

17-18-19 december, 19u-23u
Straatprojectie: The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Energy’s Evil, van Mona Marzouk, 2008

2. Entre Deux Chaises (Between Two Chairs), par Jorge Leon (2006, 16′, Anglais)

Projection publique: The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Energy’s Evil, par Mona Marzouk, 2008

—–ARTIST BIOS—–

Eric De Kuyper. The novelist (Aan Zee, De hoed van tante Jeannot amongst others), artist, essayist and director Eric De Kuyper (Brussels 1942) worked at the BRT, taught film theory at the University of Nimègue and was deputy director of the Netherlands Film Museum. Passionate about cinema and theatre, he has written numerous articles and essays. He has also directed a few films (Casta Diva, Naughty Boys, A strange love affair and Pink Ulysses). In 1988 he made his debut with the first part of his greatly orchestrated autobiography. Because of this work, the press sometimes call him ‘the Flemish Proust’. This is not unfounded as he wrote the screenplay for the film version of Proust’s La Captive along with Chantal Akerman.

Jorge Leon. Jorge Léon studied film at INSAS in Brussels and has been working as a photographer and filmmaker with a specific interest in the documentary. He has collaborated with many people in the performing arts field, including Eric Pauwels, Wim Vandekeybus, Thierry De Mey, Michèle Anne De Mey, Olga De Soto, Hervé Robbe, Xavier Lukomski, Meg Stuart and Benoît Lachambre. Since 2003 he creates documentary film work, including “de sable et de ciment”, and “U bent hier/Vous êtes ici/You are here”.

Myriam Van Imschoot. Myriam Van Imschoot is a dance researcher and dramaturg in the field of dance and performing arts. With a grant for development by the Flemish Government and an upcoming residence in the Jan Van Eyck Academy, she is currently developing her own work. She is the initiator of ‘Crash Landing Revisited (and more)’, an umbrella structure for collaborative artistic research on improvisation, oral history & sound, and catastrophe aesthetics. She was the co-maker of Tristero’s LIVING, which premièred three weeks ago in Kaaitheater. She worked as a dramaturge for Meg Stuart, Benoît Lachambre, Hahn Rowe and Philipp Gehmacher (‘FORGERIES, LOVE AND OTHER MATTERS’, ‘Auf den Tisch!’, Lugares Comunes, Like there’s no Tomorrow). With Jeroen peeters she has been running SARMA since 2003 (www.sarma.be).

Pablo Castilla Heredia (Spain 1980). After finishing his studies in Fine Arts at the University of Granada, Pablo Castilla moves to Brussels where he graduates in documentary filmmaking. In 2006, in collaboration with Frederik Depickere, he begins a series of documentaries entitled Chronicles. Man and his (unique) testimonies are thematic pillars of these series. Together they’re currently developing the third part of these series which will take place in Brussels. Pablo Castilla is also a documentary photographer and occasionally collaborates as video artist within the Brussels contemporary dance scene.

Mona Marzouk (b. 1968), Lives and Works in Alexandria (EG). Marzouk’s earlier work was largely an attempt to deconstruct the history of architecture and rebuild it using notions relating to Post-Colonial and Post-Modernist theories. Recently, Marzouk has moved away from a complete focus on architecture as a source of inspiration and has rearticulated the disparate cultural forces of Pop-Culture, Mythology, Design and Politics into her Murals, Paintings and Sculptures. In 2005, Marzouk was one of the founding members of ACAF/ Alexandria Contemporary Arts Forum, the city’s only artist-led space for visual culture. www.acafspace.org

Andrés Lübbert. Since 2004 Andrés Lubbert adapts stories that he picks up in his multicultural environment for the screen. His documentaries were shown at 25 international film festivals.

Daan Milius. Daan Milius is a co-founder of lim & Zoonen, an audiovisual collective that is based both in Brussels and Maastricht. www.flimenzoonen.nl

Klaas Boelen. Klaas Boelen (1988) studies documentary film at Rits – the school for audio-visual and performing arts in Brussels.

1. “Le guide du parc”, Sven Augustijnen, 2001, 36 minutes

2. Little Figures, Sarah Vanagt, 2003, 15 minutes
Three children refugees lend their voice to three statues at Mont des Arts: Godefroy de Bouillon, King Albert and Queen Elisabeth. Their history as being immigrants resonates with the history of Belgium of the last centuries.

3. Mathongé – Béthleem, Hugo van der Vennet, 2002, 35 minutes
Five events in Brussels – a cultural one, a sportive one, a national one, an historical one and a political one – filmed from a distance but with an engaged view. Not without wit and absurdity…

November, 19-20-21, 7pm-11pm
Street Screening: Up yours
Video by Mofa (2008)

The video by Mofa instigates the place of women in global society today, and the relation to consumer fetishism on the front cover of a magazine. The video was created in April 2008 at the “One-minute” workshop held at the Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art in Cairo featuring Dalia Soleiman as the cover girl. Duration 60 seconds.

November, 26-27-28, 7pm-11pm
Street Screening: The garden scene from Sarajevo Film Festival Film
Video by Johan van der Keuken (1993)

In 1993 Sarajevo had been under continuous siege for 20 months, and was about to face a second long, harsh winter. In the midst of this turbulent situation Sarajevo organized a film festival. What is the importance of film during war?

—–artist bios——-

Sven Augustijnen – In the work of Brussels artist Sven Augustijnen, we see a concentration on the notion of the portrait. Using a hybrid of genres and techniques, he explores the boundaries between fiction and reality and plays with the viewer’s expectations. His video work is shown in the contexts of both installation and cinema screening. After concentrating his early work on juggling words and texts and his enquiry into the properties of his material, he has been making series of ‘portraits’. Augustijnen plays with different ways of approaching that basic given: docu-soap, human-interest, fake documentary and home movies are juxtaposed and intermixed. The artist misleads the viewer, who becomes a voyeur of acts in which fiction and fact are not easily disentangled.

Sarah Vanagt – Sarah Vanagt is primarily interested in the way in which children deal with history. Her graduation film ‘After Years of Walking’ looks at the rewriting of Rwandan history after the genocide of 1994. In ‘Little Figures’, a short experimental documentary film, three immigrant children in Brussels play the role of three historical statues. Her documentary film, ‘Begin Began Begun’, focuses on the play-world of children growing up in the war-torn border zone between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her most recent work, ‘Les Mouchoirs de Kabila’, is presented in the form of video installation, and deals with images of death in the games of children in eastern Congo.

Hugo Van der Vennet was born in 1975. He studied film at the London Film School. Today he lives in Brussels and he works both as a photographer and a filmmaker.

Mofa, the nickname of Mohammed Fahmy who operates commercially under the name Ganzeer is a graphic designer, illustrator, and video artist based in Cairo, Egypt. More of his work can be seen on www.ganzeer.com

Johan van der Keuken started experimenting with photography at the age of twelve. Five years later, in 1955, he published his first book of photographs Wij zijn 17 (We are 17). After studying at the Institute of Cinematography in Paris (IDHEC) Van der Keuken started making films. Around the same time his first writings about photos and films began to appear in Dutch magazines. From 1977 onwards he wrote a column in the Dutch film magazine Skrien called ‘Uit de wereld van een kleine zelfstandige’ (From the world of the self-employed). Van der Keuken made a large number of films, published several books of photographs, prepared many installations and exhibitions, and taught seminars in European and American film schools.

26-27-28 November, 19u-23u

B-Docs presents: Itineraries
23 October 2008, 8.30pm
With films by Céline Gulekjian, Sofie Benoot, and Chloé Salembier

The tuff stone in Armenia is disappearing gradually due to the bulldozers; the border between the U.S. and Mexico cuts through communities; some hitchhikers talk about the arrival of neo-liberalism in Romania: three itineraries about the world we live in.

1. “Karastan – Pays de pierres” by Céline Gulekjian, 18 minutes, B 2006 The search for a little cross made from tuff stone becomes a journey through Armenia. In between a past that is fading away and a present still taking shape, we get to know a land, a history, and a people through their relation to the stones.

2. “Fronterismo” by Sofie Benoot, 40 minutes, B 2007 The border between the U.S. and Mexico is being reinforced. The filmmaker talks to the inhabitants of both sides.

3. “Somewhere in between” by Chloé Salembier, 40 minutes, B 2007 In talking to some hitchhikers, we get an image of a post-communistic Romania destabilized by the neo- liberal hegemony. A humoristic road-movie.

——Artist bios——

Céline Gulekjian grew up in an Armenian family that ended up in New York during the Diaspora. She studied film in New York and realized her first film “Ecart” there, a film that portraits the difference between film images and painted tiles through an intimate dialogue between mother and daughter. Once in Brussels, she continues her film studies and starts writing a script inspired by her first visit to Armenia. Between 2005 and 2006, she visits the country several times, and driven by her desire to grasp the history of a land and a people at this transitory moment, she makes the film “Karastan, pay de Pierre”. Currently, Céline Gulekjian is working on a documentary about the communal identity of the Armenian people.

Sofie Benoot (1985, Bruges, Belgium) has a Masters in Audiovisual Arts, with a concentration in documentary film, from Sint-Lukas Brussels. Her first film Fronterismo was screened at the International Film Festival, Leuven 2007 (Prize: VAF Wildcard); at Cinéma du Réel, Paris 2008; at Filmplatform Zone, Antwerpen, Kortrijk, and Gent 2008; at Dochouse, Brussels 2008; at Argos, Bruxelles 2008; at the Festival International de cine de la frontera, Juarez, Mexico 2008; at the Courtisane Festival, Gent, 2008; and at the Alexandria film festival, Virginia, USA 2008.

Chloé Salembier lives and works in Brussels. She studied social communication but is now working as a social anthropologist. After her fist visit to Eastern Europe in 2004, she developed a passion for Romania. She organizes audiovisual workshops about identity for students in Romania, she’s writing a monograph about youngsters in the city, and she made several films. Recurrent themes in her work are economic globalization, migration, and the increasing communication possibilities. She’s interested in the ways in which people adjust themselves to changing life conditions – both materially and symbolically. Through film, she can communicate with the ‘other’ and with a general audience.

B-Docs: Reisverhalen
23 oktober, 20:30

3. “Somewhere in between” van Chloé Salembier, 40 minuten, B 2007

3. “Somewhere in between” de Chloé Salembier, 40 minutes, B 2007

—–English—–

Time Square – Like Virgin
Video Street Screenings by Dorothee Marot
September 16-18, from 20:00-23:00

The video series TIME SQUARE is about how we see and experience things. How long will our brain take to sort out the information that our eyes register? What is our capacity for visual attention to our urban environment? How would the city look without signs and signals? Will we be able to navigate something so foreign?

TIME SQUARE is an invitation for contemplation, and – Like Virgin – is the first video of a series of questioning.

B-Docs presents: Portraits
With films by Manon de Boer, Florian Ecrepont, and Yuen.
September 25, 20:30

B-Docs presents three portraits where (the lack of) words takes a central role.

1. Errance by Yuen, 18 minutes, 2005 A young Chinese man films his blind father in Hong Kong. The father, at home or moving in the public arena, doggedly pursues his profession as a calligrapher. A film without words, the soundtrack is extremely poignant.

2. Charlotte by Florian Ecrepont, 30 minutes, 2008 Charlotte, age 18, suffers from anorexia. Facing the camera, she speaks of her illness, her family, and her ideals.

3. Resonating Surfaces by Manon de Boer, 39 minutes, 2006 A portrait of the Brazilian psychoanalyst Suely Rolnik, a close friend of Gilles Deleuze. Different themes emerge in this work: the relationship to the Other, between body and power, and between language and resistance.

Time Square – Like Virgin

TIME SQUARE – en Like Virgin als eerste in een reeks – zet aan tot reflectie.

B-Docs: Portretten
Met films van Manon de Boer, Florian Ecrepont, en Yuen
25 september, 20:30

Dorothea Marot is a French artist. She lives and works in Brussels. Her explorations create patchworks composed of memorabilia and decorations or the cardboard packagings she collects, as well as butterflies and trophies. She regularly photographs the result of meetings, such as family portraits. She develops projects in Brussels that question the place of the spectator and our capacity to contemplate the urban landscape and the symbols that compose this landscape. These trails of thought culminate in the outdoor installation LIBRES ARTISTES in town, or the video series TIME SQUARE.

After studying calligraphy and Chinese painting in China, Yuen studied graphic arts in Hong Kong and fine arts in France. Since 2000 he is exhibiting his work – drawings, paintings, installations – in galleries and other institutions alike. Over the past three years his work became more and more experimental. His interest in the relationship between Sound and Image lead to the forthcoming film INTIME / WORLD, shot in February 2008 in the city of Hong Kong. ERRANCE is his first film.

Dan Mintz is a composer and performer of electronic music. Originally from New York, where he was a founding member of the duo Fighter Pilot and more recently the experimental ensemble Va Va China, Dan frequently collaborates with musicians, video artists, and filmmakers. He has released two albums, and occasionally been seen DJing parties in Brussels.

Tal Hadad (1976) has developed along the last 4 years a large project called Global heart me, a new concept of music creation and broadcasting where the common music tendencies of global cities (Istanbul, Beijing, Sao Paulo) become experimental territories that inspire events, albums and exhibitions. His musical works are closely related to multimedia, visual and performance arts. He has collaborated in sound projects with diverse artists as Cao Fei or Mark Leckey. His latest inteventions have talken place in Le Plateau, Paris (2008, with Cao Fei), Kunst Werke Art Center in Berlin (2006) and DIAF contemporary art festival in Beijing (2006), or ISM Istanbul and Istanbul Biennial (2005).

COSMONAUTpostcardlille

Presenting COSMONAUT
a film by Felipe Zuñiga

In 2007 Felipe Zuñiga staged a performance at the border crossing between Mexico and the United States. He was inspired by a mural of a ‘space landscape’ painted on the highway wall as you approach by car the US border in Tijuana. Wearing a space suit he walks toward the border as an explorer seeking the land of the unknown. With the displacement of the suit, he confronts ideas of hostile and unliveable territories that might await him on the other side.

The video work adds other levels to the performance and crosses three coordinates in space and time. Firstly, the representation seeking of new lands in front of the mural; second, the actual border crossing in Tijuana, and third, the mediated space of a television news show imposing another reading to the performance afterwards. (6 minutes in loop.)

WarDiariespostcardlille

Presenting WAR DIARIES,
a film by Mariam Ghani, Emily Jacir, Ahmed Issawi, Jawad Metni, Yamini Nayar, and Prerana Reddy

War Diaries, produced by the New York Arab and South Asian Film Festival, is comprised of donated footage shot by videographers and ordinary people in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon, and Palestine.  Minimally edited and presented without voiceover commentary, the footage was screened individually before feature films much like the newsreels of yesteryear, as well as rear-projected from the back of a roving U-Haul outfitted with a screen. The footage was also screened in loop on an LCD monitor facing the sidewalk at Tribeca Cinemas. From the mundane routines of daily life amidst the wreckage to chaotic moments of violence and destruction, “War Diaries” aims to convey life under siege and occupation. “War Diaries” is an intervention in the space of the film festival, and simultaneously in public space, to punctuate the perpetual ticker tape of sound-byte headlines and pop culture cacophonies with the power of simple images, playing out in their own time.  Kran Film is excited to screen these alternate realities and introduce them into our everyday lives in Place Saint-Géry. The screening was arranged in courtesy by Prerana Reddy.

a film by Catherine Cattaruzza and Vatche Boulghourjian

Body is a video installation that proposes to examine the convergence of urban experience, social discourse, and the participation of the inhabitant within the qualitative parameters of Beirut’s post-war condition.
